Frequently Asked Questions

  • I hear this question a lot and honestly there is no right answer. In my opinion, everyone can benefit from therapy. We don’t have to wait until a crisis occurs before we get the support we need. With trauma work, it’s usually not a question of “if” but “when”. If you found yourself here, then you are probably ready to do the work to heal. It can be scary at first, but I frequently hear from clients that they wished they had come to therapy sooner.

  • During therapy sessions, we will work collaboratively to explore your experiences and how this is affecting you in the present. We will use various techniques including EMDRand IFS to support your healing and growth. Trauma therapy is different from traditional talk therapy in that it often does not require you to go into detail about your trauma, which can be triggering and re-traumatizing. We will focus more on the underlying feelings and beliefs that affect you in the present.

  • This is a hard question to answer because it is specific to each person. Some people find that they meet their goals and complete therapy in a relatively brief amount of time - say, a year or two. On the other hand, I have some clients that I’ve met with for years who continue to see benefits from ongoing therapy. Sometimes, people leave for a while and then return as new issues crop up in their lives.

Whatever course of therapy is right for you, many clients see at least some benefit after working together for a few months, especially once we get into the thick of trauma processing. I will check in with you regularly to make sure that we’re seeing progress from our work and collaborate with you on making adjustments if we’re not.

  • Yes. I currently accept BCBS, Presbyterian, Western Sky, United, Molina, and all Medicare and Medicaid Plans. Every insurance plan is different and benefits may vary. You can call your individual insurance plan for more information on therapy coverage and whether or not you have a co-pay. Click here for more information on Insurance.

  • I currently work with adults 18 and over. I provide individual therapy and do not offer couples therapy at this time. If you have questions about other types of therapy, please feel free to reach out and I can try to provide other options to meet your needs.

  • Yes. I do offer virtual sessions through a HIPAA compliant video platform. However, for trauma work I recommend in-person sessions because it provides a safe container for you to do the work without taking it back out into the world with you.

  • My office is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. While I recommend in person sessions, I am licensed to provide virtual services to anyone living in New Mexico.

  • Yes, therapy is confidential. As a licensed therapist, I am required to maintain the confidentiality of our sessions, except in certain circumstances such as if you disclose intent to harm yourself or others or report suspected child abuse or neglect.

  • It’s up to you. Many clients find relief in being able to open up about their lives in ways they haven’t been able to before. But I will never push you to share things you aren’t comfortable with and the treatment modalities I use don’t require you to share details or re-live the experience. As trust builds in therapy, you may find you feel more comfortable sharing but know that it is not required for your healing. I will give you the space and time you need to find what works for you.

  • Therapy begins with the client-therapist relationship and it is critical to your overall progress. I strive to offer a safe and non-judgmental space for you to share and discuss topics that you may not have ever shared before. If there is ever a time that you feel it is not a good fit please bring this up in therapy. I am committed to helping you in whatever way I can and I can provide you with other options or referrals that may be a better match.

  • Having a strong support system is important for healing trauma. However, friends and family don’t always have the necessary skills and training to support you. In fact, our relationships can often be an obstacle, as people may be too close and personally invested to stay focused on what’s best for your healing journey. A trained professional can provide a safe, non-judgmental space and they have the skills and experience to support you in healing your trauma and transforming your life.
